Hi everyone! I was just reviewing everyone's work on Scootpad and made some new assignments. In math I would like you to work on fractions. You will learn about halves, thirds, and fourths (quarters). Please make sure you watch the learn videos within the Scootpad questions so you understand this vocabulary before working through the problems.
In reading the skills you should be working on are parts of a story. What happens in the beginning? What happens at the end? What is the problem or solution? Read the questions carefully before choosing an answer. Also, I would like you to review skills in a second assignment that I posted on Scootpad. You can, also, continue to read books on MyOn and take AR quizzes, work on SmartyAnts, Mystery Science, Scholastic News, and/or Mind2learn lessons. There is so much to learn and to do. Hopefully you are having fun with your family, too. I hope everyone enjoyed spring break. I spent the time doing a lot of yard work with my kids, watching a few movies, and trying to keep in touch with friends and family. I would like to recognize Grace from our class for winning the Green Our Planet essay contest!!! Check out the announcement with her picture on the Nate Mack website. I have created a new page. You can access it by going to the top of this page and clicking on websites. Check it out! You should visit hand2mind website. This looks like an awesome site. Every day it has a video lesson and a follow up worksheet for math, ELA, and STEM. You just click on each day's link to watch or print. When you get on the website you will have to scroll down to get to second grade. There are weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4. There is a problem with Week 4 videos (It takes you to grade 5), but if you search Hand2mind week 4 math or ELA on YouTube the correct videos will pop up. Hopefully they will fix it soon. I can't wait to hear about all of your learning. This week - at least 3 hours a day of school work Try to work on both math and ELA each day. Suggested Work ELA: 1. Scootpad: Work on the assignments that I have assigned to you and adaptive practice path. 2. Watch the Hand2mind daily lesson and complete the printable worksheet (print it out) that goes with the lesson. 3. MyOn: Read and take an AR quiz 4. Write a journal on paper or use your Google account to write a paragraph or create a new slideshow. Don't forget to share it with me. 5. Smartyants 6. Green Our Planet has helped our school with the outdoor garden area. They provide our school with an expert gardener and lesson ideas. Some grades have had a Chef demonstration, too. They have created video lessons that we can all enjoy. Yeah!! Also, if you watch the videos and enter a short written response. They call it an essay. You could be entered to win $25!!! Hopefully, someone from my class does this and wins. Here is the link.
Hello students and parents,
I am glad to see many of you completing work on Scootpad, Myon and taking AR quizzes and making sure that you/your child are continuing his/her education at home. I will be contacting each of you to check in and discuss progress on assignments. I might not get to everyone the first day, but please expect a call/text. There has been a problem accessing Smartyants, so I am taking that off the list below. Smartyants is now working!!! (3/31/20) Again, on our Nate Mack education plan, it is suggested that students spend about 3 hours per day on academics. We are learning about fire safety and will be starting to write informational paragraphs about this topic. We watched this fun and informational video. Watch it again and again. Our class will be completing our unit study of biodiversity: the range and variety of animals found on earth. We have identified and sorted animals into specific groups, done a scientific study of the diversity of frogs, and learned about various types of birds so that we could draw a design and then create a prototype bird feeder. During our study of biology, we have learned about the concepts of habitat and species.
Click the button to view the lessons. The linked buttons will only work for the next 10 days. The year has started off strong. You should have got the STAR reading comprehension assessment results on Friday. Please sign one copy to return to school and keep the other copy for your records.
In math we have been working on fact fluency strategies like doubles, counting on or counting back, and using fact families. We just started working on word problems and have learned to read, think, underline important information, and write an equation to match the story. This helps them think about what is happening and what the unknown is in each story. The class has been working on writing personal narratives. They have "It Happened to Me" stories and stories about their friends. We have been reviewing using capitals, punctuation, proper handwriting, developing a story that has a beginning, middle, and end, and adding sight and sound descriptive words to their writing. The class has learned about their MyOn accounts and are learning how to pick "just right books" within their reading level, and most students have started taking AR quizzes. You may have heard about how we found a gecko lizard by the computer lab inside the school and after everyone got to see it we released it into the garden. Last week, we returned to the garden to see what was happening there. Many students said that they saw the lizard, but that was unconfirmed. We are all sure the gecko is living a happy life in our school garden. I am sure there will be many more adventures this year. Back to School!
Dear Parents and Students, Welcome to 2nd grade! The school year has started again, and I want you to know how happy I am to have your child in my class for this exciting and challenging new year. I am looking forward to getting to know both you and your child. I will keep you informed of your child’s progress and any upcoming events that may go on during the school year. Be on the lookout for newsletters that I will send home with your child at the beginning of each week. This newsletter will be attached to the front of your child’s homework and include dates of upcoming events, weekly spelling words, a reading log, along with updates on what is going on in our classroom. You can also visit our class web page at http://chumakov.weebly.com or the school web site athttps://sites.google.com/nv.ccsd.net/natemack to see what’s going on. Policies and Procedures Homework: Homework is sent home on Monday each week and due back the last day of the week. Please make sure your child completes the nightly reading log. I would like you to sign the reading log and check over the work before it is returned to me. There will be a newsletter attached to the homework each week. Phonics/Spelling Words: Each Monday, your child will get a list of words that he/she should practice reading and spelling. These words will be on the newsletter and in the homework. Your child will be tested on these words each Friday. Grading: Nate Mack continues to utilize a standards-based report card to report student progress. These report cards will provide information on students’ mastery toward Common Core State Standards. Once a standard has been taught and repetitively practiced, an assessment will be given. The assessment will be graded with a rubric or percentage and recorded in the grade book. Progress reports will be sent home throughout the semester. You can also access your child’s grades using Infinite Campus on-line. If you do not have a password please contact the front office. Birthdays: Your child’s birthday is important to me, but birthday treats and celebrations are not allowed at school. Your child may pass out birthday invitations at the beginning of the day if there is an invitation for each one of his/her classmates. Otherwise, invitations should be passed out after school. This will help to avoid hurt feelings. Specials Schedule: Monday- P.E. Tuesday- art Wednesday- music Thursday- P.E. Friday- library Behavior Management: I strongly believe in praising and rewarding positive behavior. I use stickers for hard work, Nate Mack money for individual rewards, team points to earn prizes, and praise to make children aware that I notice good behavior. The classroom rules are:
Students who choose not to obey these rules will pay one Mack dollar back to the class bank. If negative behaviors persist, part or all of a student’s recess will be lost. Parents will be notified if the behavior continues. Students who have followed the classroom rules all day will earn one dollar of school money. Students may be given extra dollars for going above and beyond! Students save the earned money to buy prizes and privileges from the school or classroom store. I encourage you to contact me if you have questions or concerns about anything going on with your child or our class. I want to know how you and your child are feeling about this school year, so let me know! You can call me at the school or send me an email to [email protected].
